February is Heart Month - a timely reminder that heart health isn’t something that just sits in the background of our wellbeing, it’s central to it. Whether you’re on site handling machinery or in the office managing logistics and planning, understanding and acting on heart health can make a real difference - even save a life.In an industry like plant hire, where physical effort, long days, variable temperatures and tight schedules are all part of the territory, it’s easy to focus only on the machines. But people fuel the machines - and with that comes responsibility. So let’s talk about why heart health should matter to everyone at Martin Plant Hire, and why this February isn’t just another month on the calendar.Heart Facts Everyone Should KnowHere’s the blunt truth: - Heart and circulatory diseases are the UK’s biggest killer, responsible for around one in four deaths. - Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are a leading cause of sudden death, and most happen in everyday places - including workplaces. - Early CPR and using a defibrillator within minutes can more than double someone’s chance of survival. Those stats aren’t abstract - they’re people. Colleagues. Friends. Family.(Statistics based on British Heart Foundation data.)Why This Matters on SiteYou don’t need to be a medic to make a difference. Plant yards, depots and construction sites are busy places. Heavy machinery, tight deadlines and physical work mean unexpected events can happen, and promptly spotting a medical emergency is as critical as spotting a site hazard. When a cardiac arrest occurs, the most crucial minutes are the first ones. - Knowing where a defibrillator is, - Recognising the signs of cardiac distress, and

We've had a pretty decent summer this year. But once autumn arrives, who knows what each day's weather will bring. There's a good chance we'll experience some unpredictable weather. And high winds and heavy rain can cause problems around your garden. Here are some tips to help you make sure your garden's ready for autumn, so you head into the harsher winter months with everything as you like it.

A patio is just another way of saying ‘a paved area' in your garden. It lets you make more of your garden, whether that's entertaining or just relaxing. And it's a low-maintenance option so, once you've built it, you'll not have too much to do to keep it looking great.

Making your own BBQ pit requires a little bit of work. But think of all the fun times you'll have once you've built it - that should keep you going.

Cleaning your gutters is one of these jobs it's easy to put off. It's not exactly the most obvious way to look after your home. But it's an important task. It can lead to property damage and an avoidable bill to pay. If your gutters are full of debris then they can't move water away as they should. Which means water gets where you don't want it to get. It can get in behind the gutters and cause damp problems, it can cause wooden fascias to warp and rot and it can even cause damage to your brickwork if it's left unchecked for a longer period.

If you've decided to create a new outdoor space using decking, you've come to the right place. We've got all the tools you'll need for the project. But before you start laying your deck, there are a few things to think about first.

There's obviously the aesthetic reason - a stump is unsightly. And a stump often takes up space that could otherwise be put to better use. You might also find that your stump has problems with suckering - where new shoots and growth occur on the trunk and the roots. Even if your stump is completely dead, it can still cause problems. Root diseases, like honey fungus, can spread across the garden - so it's worth making sure they can't take root by removing the stump.

Scarifying is a process that you carry out to remove organic matter (usually this is mostly weeds and previous grass cuttings) from around the base of your grass. It removes this lateral growth and helps to aerate the soil - which promotes healthy, uniformed growth. If you don't do scarify your lawn it will start to struggle as light and water will be unable to reach the roots of the grass. As water can't drain into the grass due to the organic matter blocking it, here in Scotland, where it rains a lot, you are likely to end up with water sitting on the surface, making your lawn soggy, unattractive and unusable.
